Austin TX Real Estate and General Information
|
|
Are you looking for a home in Austin, Texas?
|
I was born and raised in Port Arthur, Texas, and moved to Austin in 1976. I have been a Realtor here for several years and would be glad to help.
|
As the capital of Texas, Austin is the seat of Travis County, the 4th-largest city in Texas, and the 16th-largest in the U.S. According to the 2000 census, Austin is the 3rd-largest-growing large city in America with a 2006 estimated population of 709,893 residents. As of 2007, the population has grown to over 1.5 million residents.
Austin is a productive, educated, thriving city which continues to attract new and existing businesses to the Central Texas area. Our beautiful city, Austin, and the surrounding area (including Georgetown, Round Rock, Cedar Park, Dripping Springs and Bastrop), is expected to grow by more than 800,000 to 1.2 million people over the next 15 to 20 years. Interestingly, home values have not increased at the same rate as homes in other cities across the country, so if you are looking to purchase, your timing could not be better. Combine this information with a lower rate of unemployment, low interest rates, and excellent educational facilities such as The University of Texas, St. Edward's, Concordia and and you have found yourself a very desireable place to live and raise a family.Austin Community College,
Among the Best
The city which calls itself The Live Music Capital of the World has recently been highly ranked as a great place to live by many major organizations. Money magazine selected Austin as the No. 1 Best Big City in their “Best Places to Live” piece. Austin was also selected by MSN to be the greenest city in America. CNN Headline News ranks Austin as number 2 in the nation's cities with the best people in regards to personalities and attributes of the citizens. As of July 2008, Austin ranks 6th on Kiplinger’s Personal Finance’s newest list of top 10 cities in which to live, work and play. This list ranks cities based on activities, abundance of jobs, strength of their economies and activities within the area.
Culture
As its slogan suggests, Austin is the amphitheater for all sorts of live music performances. The city has more music venues per capita than any other U.S. city. South by Southwest is a film-music-multimedia festival held in Austin every spring and is one of the largest music festivals in the country with more than 1,400 performers. Celebrating its 50th-anniversary in 2008, the Zilker Park Summer Music Festival is held during the Texas Relays and is another of the many events full of music and entertainment. Some Austinites also take pride in the eccentricities in lifestyle, character and beliefs in a movement called Keep Austin Weird. This motto, along with promoting the city's underlying quirks and diversity also supports local and independent businesses such as mom-and-pop shops. The South Austin Museum of Popular Culture is the likely culprit that has given Austin its “weird” reputation as it collects, preserves and showcases the uniqueness and oddities that reflect Austin's contributions to worldwide pop culture. The Ballet Austin is also another attribute that puts the city in international spotlight. Ballet Austin is the 4th-largest ballet academy in the country with a 20-member professional company and the international award-winning artistic director, Stephen Mills. Many famous people have come from Austin, including but not limited to Willie Nelson, Matthew McConaughey, Lance Armstrong, Sandra Bullock and Kevin Costner.
Recreation
Outside of the vibrant nightlife, Austin provides many other points of interest, including the Texas Memorial Museum, located on the campus of the University of Texas at Austin. The museum holds a collection of 5.7 million specimens in the a variety of sciences. Barton Springs Pool is one of Austin's most unique attractions. The spring-fed pool is the length of 3 football fields and is nestled in the hearts of the city in Zilker Park. At 68 degrees year-round, the pool is always welcoming for swimmers. Mount Bonnell is the 3rd-hight point in Austin at 780 feet and provides multiple trails for hikes which lead to spectacular views of the city.
Education
Austin is home to the Texas Longhorns. Located in Austin, the University of Texas' flagship school is a well-known NCAA Division I school. The Austin community strongly supports the athletics at UT, especially in basketball and baseball. Austin can be quite the college town as it is also home to Austin Community College, Concordia University at Austin, Huston-Tillotson College and St. Edward's University. Several other institutions can also be found within city limits. Once again, Austin ranks high as America's No. 1 College Town according to the Travel Channel. The city is mostly served by the Austin Independent School District, with 78,000 students enrolled. Austin was ranked by Central Connecticut State University researchers in 2007 as the 23rd most literate city in America. Seven other schools districts cover the remainder of Austin. Many private and alternative schools are also available for Austin students.
